Recycling Wrapping Paper

Do you know how to shop for recyclable wrapping paper? Every year, Americans use 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper. If you are unable to use reusable bags or cloth to wrap your presents, it’s important that you purchase recyclable wrapping paper! Some wrapping paper has decorative elements or an internal lining that make it unrecyclable.

Here’s what to look out for when buying a roll this season:
1) Avoid wrapping paper with glitter or faux metal. Some wrapping paper has designs that use glitter or look gold and silver. These decorative elements are often not flush with the paper itself, meaning it is added directly on top of the wrapping paper. This type of paper is NOT recyclable.
2) Check for “extra thick” or “heavy-duty” wrapping paper. This advertisement often means that the paper is coated with plastic or metal linings to make it more durable. These are NOT recyclable.
3) Feel and see the texture of the paper. Does the paper have a suede or leather feel? Is it shiny, and does it appear to have a coating? Coated wrapping papers are NOT recyclable.
4) Stick with the classics! Recyclable wrapping paper will be simpler in design, made with 100% paper, and will often be more affordable. Always check for a How2Recycle label on the packaging to ensure it is recyclable. DM or email us at wwraeduoutreach@gmail.com if you are unsure.

Remember to NEVER recycle the plastic wrap surrounding your wrapping paper.
