Coffee Cup Recycling
It's National Espresso Day! Earlier this month, we celebrated National Cappuccino Day with some coffee cup recycling reminders. Let's review common coffee cups and their proper disposal methods:
1) Single use "Paper" or "Plastic" cups: These cups are made with mixed materials and are NOT recyclable. Traditional disposable coffee cups have a paper like exterior and plastic interior lining. Do NOT recycle these. Their plastic lids may be recyclable: just look for a plastic #1-7 label!
2) Plastics #1-7: These cups are used for iced coffees and cold beverages only, as they are not safe to use with high temperatures. These cups, like ones used for iced coffees and sodas, are recyclable at the WWRA.
3) Bioplastic cups: These cups often appear to be plastic, but have labels such as "100% biodegradable" or "Industrial Compost Only." These products are NOT recyclable. Learn more about bioplastics here: https://wwrarecycles.org/nonrecyclable-bioplastics/
4) Aqueous cups or Styrofoam-like cups: Styrofoam or Styrofoam alternatives are NOT recyclable at the WWRA. These waterproof cups can be disposed of in the trash.
5) Reusable ceramics or thermal coffee cups! These coffee cups are not recyclable, but are the most sustainable choice for your coffee. Many coffee shops allow you to bring in your own cup, and some even offer a discount if you do! Remember to bring your reusable cup next time you get your favorite beverage
